We are leaving for Pennsic tomorrow late afternoon, after the pooky is picked up from day care. There's still food shopping, garb packing, and a couple other things to do.

I am trying to not be sick anymore, thanks to my dear sweet daughter and whatever she brought home with her earlier in the week. Kiddie's Dimetap seems to be doing adequately.

Job- didn't get called for interview for one today, so that's a wash. Turning in stuff for the elementary job tomorrow. Crossing many fingers for that one. An interview. Please.

I'm still waking up after a busy Saturday, so cleverness isn't on the radar.

Last night we had an unexpected and most enjoyable evening when [livejournal.com profile] cortana called us from Pittsburgh! He and Tiff invited us to meet up with Tiff's parents and brother for dinner. We settled on Red Hot & Blue at the Waterfront, and really had a nice time. It was so nice to see Tom and Tiff again, after... 3 years? It's been a while. Also, Tiff's parents are really nice, and score way high on the cool factor. Dinner itself was yummy. I had the sweet iced tea (a southern thang), but as Tiff's mom and I noticed, there was a distinct cinnamon taste. Not something I'd normally add, but it was tasty.

Earlier that day it was "Holy crapola, it's one week to land grab" time and while [profile] fiannaharpar was making clothes for the Pookster, I was cutting wood for the yurt door frame and poles from the center ring. Everything is cut now, I need to drill the holes in the roof poles, sand down their points, drill and screw together the door frame, and drill holes in the khana poles. I'm sure there are a couple other things in there that I'm missing.

The Chatham day camp is going well. Last week I had to come back for two seperate performances. Wednesday was the 50th anniversary picnic, MCed by Handyman Joe Negri himself. I was asked to write a fanfare for the occasion, for two trumpets and two trombones. It went very well, and people seemed to like it. Even Joe said it was real nice. That was neat. The best part of that whole evening? My wife and daughter were out in th audience watching, and before we started playing Lake called out, "I love you, Daddy!" Yeah, I'm a sucker for my kid.

This coming week is the last week of camp. I have one additional performance with the Elementary group (ages 5-6, with a small group of 4 yr olds) doing "Castle Dances," which is to say I'm teaching them medieval dance. SCA style. They've been doing quite well, even though some of the directions are a bit much for the younger kids. (I won't go off on other kids who are just space cadets) I've been using my recorder and a CD compiled by [livejournal.com profile] blackpaladin for the music, and I have two boys who want a copy of the CD to use for practice at home. Other kids in other groups will vie for what dance is next. We're doing Black Nag, Turkish (Maltese) Bransle, Horses Bransle and the Tangle Bransle. Tangle and Black Nag are most popular, but the others get their votes. The only dance I 'abandoned' was Heart's Ease, though I had more than one kid say that it was hard, but fun.

Today is a slow and late morning, with more sewing and woodwork to be done before a trek to Nany's is in order for this afternoon, much to Lake's delight.

While not 100% just yet, I'm over the fever that plagued me for four days. Now my throat needs to calm the hell down and return to it's unsctratched, unswollen state. But I'll take that over the fever. I'm glad I didn't have to worry about if it were strep or not.

Let's see, Pennsic. It was a strange one this year, but a deliberate strange as opposed to last year's stranger-than-planned. I didn't get to see or do as much as I wanted, but then again, as my sweetie put it, we weren't gonna be there anyway. So it was all bonus. We all did weekends, and I showed up Monday for the choir concert. I noticed that many of the fighters were out on the field when I went for a parking space. Then, when I got out of the car, I heard the drums. I asked myself, "Why does this smell like the field battle?" Then I reached the field. It was the field battle!! WTF?!? This'll teach me to check the Pennsic battle schedule every single year from here on out and never trust tradition. So, I got to drum with Yama Kaminari, but no conch shell since the battle was well underway and the shell was still at camp. So, no Also Sprach Sama-thustra, or Jeapordy-dess. Alas, next year.

The rest of the day went very well. It was fun seeing everything and hanging out with friends that I haven't seen in a long time. The concert that evening went well. I see areas for improvement, both on the choir's part and on mine as the director. I need in increase my scope on our performances and any new music for them. Changes in personell will just have to be dealt with as they happen.

Fortunately, our tent survived the flood. The carpet remnants didn't, but those were the only things we had to chuck. Everything's dry, and we can't wait to use the yurt again and not have to deal with the nylon again.

I'm really hoping that next year we can do the full second week. It'll be so nice to be able to stay up for longer than 24 hrs at a time. A trip home or two will be needed, but that won't be bad at all. It was just so great to be there and see everyone.

Hm, preparation. School starts next week. We're in the midst of in-service days, and I'm still without a room. It's not that bad since 75% of what I ordered in my budget hasn't shown up yet, either, so there you go. I do feel that the beginning of this year will be far less stressful than last year, for obvious reasons, but I hope that I can gain ground on these kids. I don't just want it to be easier, I want it to be better. I have many new ideas that I want to try, so here's hoping.

Ok, got that out, feel better now. ;-)

Today's [livejournal.com profile] fiannaharpar's day. After coming back home yesterday, a day early but much the better-rested today, Jenn's back at Pennsic to help cook Baronial Dinner, something she loves to do. I'm taking care of Turkey-Butt, who's blissfully (and without argument, I might add) asleep for her nap. Tomorrow will be my turn to head up for the day/evening, and I'll direct the choir performance. I'm glad I won't have to miss that. At the rehearsal yesterday it all sounded pretty darn good, even though there's only eight of us.

Yesterday was a good day despite the night before. Lake was officially camping overnight for the first time, and she went to bed just fine. However, around 11pm she must've been too cold because she started squirming and whining. We tried rocking her, putting her in our bed, and letting her work it out (some) but none of it worked. I wound up holding her as she lay on my shoulder, walking and rocking her until she finally fell back to sleep. When I managed to sneak a peek at my watch, it was almost 5am. Yikes. I was also getting quite cold, so I took a chance and got back into bed with Lake laying on my chest, and thankfully she stayed asleep, and I managed to get in a few hours myself. So, part of the reasoning of coming back Sunday was "Don't wanna do that again".

It's been so great to see everyone up there. We've gotten a lot of "....hey! You're not supposed to be here!" (thank goondess they were smiling when they said it) and Lake of course has stolen the show several times. Lots of folks haven't seen us or her since last year, and it's nice to catch up. Can't wait to be back up there tomorrow. I'm really happy that we decided to go.

Busy times

Yesterday: Take bunch-o-crap to Pennsic (bedding, chairs, carpet remnants, etc.), try to fix leaky tent with duct tape, drop off war conch shell at Kaminari, oh wait- before I go any further:

It took a bloody hour and forty minutes to get to Cooper's

Normally, it's only 45, but since traffic was *fucked* due to reducing I79 to one lane, it took forever. Feh. Anyway, I got there. Let's see, where was I, oh yeah- I dropped off the conch shell, came home, put high chair in truck, got my sorry ass into the shower, and picked up the rest of my family to head out to see friends for dinner. They have a 3 1/2 month old daughter who is just cute-cute-cute. And I haven't seen Lake next to such a young baby in a long time, which made me realize just how big she is. She's damn near not a baby anymore. I really hadn't noticed her most recent growth spurt, but I see it now. It was a great time. The food was great, Lake had a blast running around (they have a big back yard), and it was fun hanging out with our friends, which was loooong overdue. Lake was going strong two hours after her normal bedtime, and didn't pass out until we were over halfway home. It was a very good evening. :-)

Today I put Finn in doggy daycare, do some shopping, and get ready to head up to Pennsic tomorrow with Jenn and Lake. Hopefully the rain will subside, and all will be purty for the weekend.
