Laboring days
Sep. 4th, 2005 09:52 pmThe new job definitely does not allow the time I had for checking LJ and making posts everyday. For this I am bummed, but more important things do take precedence. Not that there is a shortage of things postable.
Like the impromptu medieval dances I taught in my high school music appreciation class. I was pulling a lesson about music history out of my ass (again) and started with the renaissance. I explained as they were listening to shawms how this was literally dance music. Someone asked, "Show us one!" I told them it'd be boring. They persisted. One student, Saeed, got up (he's about 6' tall with dreds down to the middle of his back, btw...) and challenged others to get up. Eventually I had five other kids in an entirely African-American class learning the horse's bransle with only my voice as accompaniment. Even a guy on the varsity football team was part of it, and he had his jersey on. I taught another bransle after that using more students, and they picked up on both dances quick. It was amazing. Completely stumped me. One of the students, a cheerleader, told me later that evening after our Kennywood parade that she thought the dances were a lot of fun! O_o My dear sweet wife is trying to emphasize that I'm going to like this job a lot more than my last one, and I think she may be right...
Like going through my first Fall Fantasy at Kennywood as assistant band director and having another drummer comment that she heard I could play drums pretty well. (I'd been idly rap-tap-tapping while kids got changed in the band room) I told her we'd have to jam at some point.
Like Lake having a blast at her friend Elizabeth's third birthday party, a princess party, in full princess regalia and then spending the evening at her Nany's.
Like this editorial comment for our gov't and Katrina: . . - . / . . - / . - -
Like TCU upsetting OU. (Hawwwww, yeah, baby!!)
Like arranging a 17th century Methodist hymn in a New Orleans style for a capella trio (me, Jenn, and our choir director Tim) on an evening's notice and rehearsing it in ...oh, 'bout 10 minutes max for two performances today at church. And us kicking *ass* with it.
>><<>><<>><<
I will miss my regular updates until I have the fortune to get my shit together at my new job. I still have a long way to go, merely because I'm starting from square one, but I have resources and materials and must get through them and incorporate them. Updates when I can. For those interested, anyway.
