Update #2
I visited our drummer, Erich, in the hospital earlier today. His fianceƩ Jamie was there, camped out with him. He's off the respirator, is doing better, but seemed to not be feeling so hot at the time.
Wow. If you've never seen someone who's been in a bad accident before, you can't be prepared for what you're about to see. Erich has two big stitched cuts around his neck, and the swelling and discoloration of his skin threw me when I first saw him. I wasn't ready to see him look so bad. He looked uncomfortable and tired; not surprising at all. Jamie seemed to be holding up strongly, though. She's really dedicated to him, and it was good to see her as well. I told them that Jenn still hasn't had the kid, that I'd put him on my church's prayer request list and mentioned him here on LJ. I managed to make him smile twice, for which I'm proud, but I realized that overall I didn't know what the heck to say. I wanted to convey my sentiment, my support, my concern and my hope, which I think I did, but that just kinda threw me. Without Jamie there it would've been a lot tougher, too, since Erich really isn't in shape to hold a lengthy conversation. I'm glad I went, and if Lake shows up before he gets out, I may visit him and bring the kid along. I just hope he recovers fully.
