Big ol' happy birthday wishes to [livejournal.com profile] cyano and [livejournal.com profile] c_star!! Have great and wonderful days!
raystrobel47: (Tx flag)
I love my wife. She'd convinced me to open my birthday present early this evening, and since I was husband/daddy-napped to a surprise dinner at Sonic I thought 'sure!'. Well, she managed to get me another Texas flag. The one I've had since I was in high school, that's been hung on the wall in my dorm rooms and bachelor apartments, had been flying proudly on our flagpole for the last three years or so, also thanks to my sweetheart. Well, the time had taken its toll, and it was faded and tattered.

So I got a new one! Not just any new Texas flag, but one that's been flown at the capitol building in Austin! And that's not all!! According to the certificate, which itself is neat, this new flag was flown on March 2, which is Texas' Independence Day, y'all. How. Frickin'. Cool.

Cool enough that this flag ain't flyin' on no flagpole, nowhere, nohow. I'll get a synthetic durable flag for that purpose. This one's getting framed and displayed. :-) I love my wife.

Oh, and I would be most remiss in dismissing the beautiful card my daughter drew for me, all in purple. It was beautiful and sweet, and her name is with [livejournal.com profile] fiannaharpar's on the certificate, making it even more special.

...scuse me...

I had a wonderful birthday celebration. After a day yesterday with just me and Pookie, today was awash with people and fun and OH MY GOD FOOD!

Really, I wasn't thinking of having any major bruhaha or anything, I just wanted friends over. But what I got was more than just friends over. My lovely, wonderful, and talented wife cooked her ass off- she made fried chicken (in the oven), this roast that had a beautimus marinade out on the grill (dude, it had cumin, it *had* to be yummy), Hungarian rice (it involves bacon grease. no more needs be said.)(ok, I lied, green pepper and onion too), homemade bread, and chocolate cake. Now, when I say chocolate cake, y'all may think "Oh, how nice, many people love chocolate cake." No. This chocolate cake, double chocolate to be exact, was a two-layer covered with a combination of strawberries, vanilla, almond?, and thickener, all blended with a hand-mixer, and poured over each layer. The icing was really a ganache that Jenn got from Alton Brown's recipe that begins with 2 sticks of butter, dark chocolate, and heavy cream. Since the strawberry concoction turned a bit of the cake into pudding practically, it was the ganache that quite literally held the cake together. And it was ... was... oh, it was horrible. Yah. That's it. Horrible. You surely didn't miss anything. Nope. Not a thing.

This year's celebration was especially cool because of folx like [livejournal.com profile] aengus1385 and others from up Butler way, and their kids. They got along swimmingly with Pookie, who obviously had a blast. J. brought fantastic beer- Dogfish Head's Indian Brown Ale. Day-um, but this was yummy; it was dark, nutty, and smooth. I thoroughly approved. Oh, he brought homemade mead too, which was equally yummy and enjoyed by many. I got to share my Brooklyn Chocolate Stout, which many liked, so it was nice to see the beer flow. It happens so rarely at our house.

[livejournal.com profile] blackpaladin brought games (duh) and he introduced Dominion to our Butler friends, while I was in a round of Ticket To Ride. I gave two Cut Once CDs away to said Butler friends, who I think may have been surprised to know I was in a band. The laughs were many, the food was plentiful, I even got a couple of cards and gifties (thank you again), and I wouldn't've changed a thing. I know some were not able to make it, but the circumstances were completely understandable. So after all was packed up, I'm full, happy, and my sweetie outdid herself and cleaned the kitchen and dishes and prepared my lunch for tomorrow!!! Saint this woman, please.

It's a shame that I have to get up to go to work tomorrow, but this was a damn fine night. My friends rock, and my wife rocks even harder. Sweetie, you're the best. Thank you.

Hrm. New theme. Don't suck. Not the one I originally meant to choose, but I like the checkerboard 'n other bits. (reminder for me- hp lovers rock)

With no private lesson tonight, I was able to get quite a bit written for "Dans Profundo," which I really need to finish soon. The end, though, is in sight. And I like it. I really can't wait to get this finished and then get a taste of what it's really gonna sound like. Dammit, I wish I could stay up three more hours and get the thing done...

Just over a day until my birthday! I still get excited. I like having the special day. I love having friends, and a family, to share it with.

The guy way

To my li'l punkin: Happy birthday!! You are 4 years old today, and you act every bit of it. You did magnificently at your birthday party yesterday, being so grown up and sharing your toys with seven or eight other kids over! I'm glad that you progressed beyond your "I wanna be three some more" phase, which lasted up until around December or so. This last year has seemed like the longest so far, but that's probably because you're doing so much. This year holds even more promise, more opportunities, and more growing. You're reading, you're dancing, and who knows what else you'll be doing by the time you turn five. I'm constantly amazed, confused, proud, and excited with all that you do. Love you, sweetie!

Pop's 84 today. Eighty-frickin'-four.

Happy Birthday, Shawn!

I hope to celebrate some part of it with you in the near future. Here's to 15 years of friendship, bro.
raystrobel47: (Conch shell)

Happy birthday, JENN!

You are my favorite person.

You are a beautiful woman,
a fabulous cook,
a tremendous listener,
talented and driven in many things,
sometimes acting like a frat boy or a 10 year old, take your pick,
you're frickin' hilarious,
and most of all,
you are my best friend.

And I love you.

Happy birthday, sweetie.

The party on Friday was better than I could've expected. It was so great to see everyone (shouts to you all, ain't gonna lj-tag ya this time) and I had lots 'n lots of fun. Of course, the addition of Taiko DrumMaster to my addic-er, game collection for the PS2 was great. As were the tacky and downright tastless cards (ehsept de choos cart- joo noh joosef), it all added up to a fun evening. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] otterblossom for pointing out the rainbow, too! I dare say that's the first rainbow I've seen since I've been in Pittsburgh. It's the hills, I tell ya, they hide 'em. Pizza, cake, friends, games, thanks to everyone for such a fun time.

The only three negatives about yesterday were as follows: I have a slight cold, I had to return to teaching after spring break, and the day eventually had to end. Otherwise, R0X0R!! )

No detailed entry on birthday celebrations. Yet.

Let's just say I had one of the better birthday "parties" in a number of years- I think, actually, since [livejournal.com profile] fiannaharpar organized my 29th b-d party at Gullifty's. Many people, much fun, great food from Texas, chocolate, and karaoke. Yes, karaoke. I s**t you not. On the PS2.

More details later, I promise, but I have new lessons to plan. *sigh*

Yep, tomorrow I turn 34. Yi-hi, daddy-o, I know. Currently I'm trying to stave off a cold that will otherwise leave me miserable and possibly calling off tomorrow. Just the present I didn't want...

Today's been wierd. I went to a funeral viewing for a music teacher who died due to complications from routine heart surgery. I taught with her at Independence MS when I subbed at Bethel Park, and the news really shocked and upset me. I saw some teachers I knew there, paid my respects, and left. It felt good to at least show up and be there. It's really sad.

[livejournal.com profile] lstrobel's been most the whiny little one lately, and I'm not sure why. Although we did have a good time both sitting in the papasan while I read her her alphabet book, and she did a really good job of dressing herself for bed (sweatshirt, pants, socks, and slippers), it's kinda been a tough kid day.

Earlier this morning I talked for a good 40 minutes to my dad, which was really nice. We rarely have those kind of talks, mostly because when I call, I talk to my dad and my mom, and my mom tends to talk more. So, I called him up and just chatted away for a while, which we both enjoyed very much.

I want. The rain. To stop.

Getting back to my birthday-thang, I hope to see folxes over on Tuesday, and appearantly my lovely and wonderful [livejournal.com profile] fiannaharpar has made plans, but being a good husband, I've no fricking clue what they may be, so I'll just say that it'll be fun to celebrate with whoever is here, and I really feel most lucky to have the friends that I do, both in the Pittsburgh area and across the US. Wow, is that a run-on sentence or what?!?

Happy March, everyone! For a long time March had been my favorite month because it was my birthday month. Yes, that's right, four weeks from today I turn 34 and give a how-the-hell-are-you salute to my mid-30s. So, I'm writing my wish list. Not that I expect anything, but if yer interested, here it is.

Schtuff! )

Yipe! Meant to post this 'round noon...
